Domestic flights resume in Libya after more than two weeks of suspension

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Domestic flights resumed on Tuesday in Libya to serve cities in the eastern region after more than two weeks of suspension.

In a statement, the management of Maitigua International Airport, in the eastern suburbs of Tripoli, announced the resumption of flights to the airports of Benina in Benghazi, Tobruk and Lebrag in Beidha.

Domestic flights between eastern and western Libya were suspended in early March, in the wake of the swearing-in ceremony of the new cabinet of the parliament-appointed Prime Minister, Fathi Bachagha.

On Friday, the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Libya, Ms. Stephanie Williams, called for the resumption of civilian flights between Tripoli and Benghazi, stressing that freedom of movement throughout Libya is a "fundamental human right that must be respected".

Earlier, in a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdelhamid al-Dbaiba, US Special Envoy and Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, expressed "the need to immediately reopen Libyan airspace to domestic flights".
