Deputy Chairman of Libyan Presidential Council welcomes AU support for reconciliation efforts in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The deputy Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, Abdallah al-Lafi, has hailed the African Union (AU) for its support to efforts of the Presidential Council in the technical and consultative fields for national reconciliation in Libya.

Mr. al-Lafi also hailed the role of international parties and the United Nations Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) during the meeting of the Consultative Committee for the National Reconciliation Project, said a statement of the Presidential Council.

Mr. al-Lafi chaired the meeting held on Sunday in Tripoli, which was attended by the Congolese Foreign Minister Jean-Claude Gakosso, special envoy of the Congolese president and the accompanying delegation, as well as the chairman and members of the Follow-up Committee of the National Reconciliation Project. 

He also stressed the role of national skills and expertise that had prepared this project to overcome the current crisis and achieve stability in the country.

The African Union is supporting the national reconciliation project in Libya, and is playing a role in creating the conditions for its success, with technical support and advice, as well as contributing with Libyans to the realization of this national project.

The head of the African Union mission, Gakasso, reaffirmed the AU's support for the national reconciliation project in Libya to move to the stage of stability and build a democratic state, expressing the commitment of the Union countries to assist Libya in this matter with expertise and consultations.

The head of the Congolese diplomacy expressed his support to the decision of the Presidential Council to organize an inclusive conference from which important decisions will emerge, paving the way for the realization of all the agendas of the stage, the first of which is national reconciliation.

The meeting also discussed the practical steps approved by the committee at its recent meetings to convene the preparatory meeting for national reconciliation and to put all the agreed proposals on the table in a way that enhances the success of this national project and provides all the reasons for its success.

It was decided to hold the preparatory meeting during the period 8 -12 January next in the city of Tripoli, and to invite all parties participating in the political process to choose their representatives for the meeting, which will include all components of the Libyan people.
