Civil society organisations call for a 6-9 month transition in Mali

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - Some 40 civil society organisations (CSOs) under the umbrella the Election Observation Mission in Mali (MODELE-Mali) on Thursday called on the transitional authorities to work towards a return to constitutional normality within "a reasonable period of six to nine months".

Following the sanctions imposed on Mali last Sunday by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), MODELE-Mali has recommended to the authorities to immediately publish "a clear, precise and realistic timetable" for the necessary elections at the end of the transition, notably the presidential and legislative elections.

It also called for the urgent revision of the electoral roll as soon as possible, in order to have a reliable register.

In the statement, the CSOs said they had taken note of the heavy sanctions imposed by ECOWAS on the transitional authorities and the Malian people.

The sanctions were imposed after the transitional authorities failed to organise the presidential election by 27 February 2022, contrary to the agreement reached with the ECOWAS Authority on 15 September 2021 and the commitment of the Transitional Charter.

MODELE-Mali, while regretting these sanctions, had alerted the transition authorities to respect the commitments made in the name of the people and the international norms and conventions.

To this end, the CSOs asked the transitional authorities to, among other things, search for a broad political consensus on the duration of the transition and the main missions to be carried out.
