Burundi: Govt. supports ex-president Buyoya for Francophonie scribe

Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) – The Burundian government is canvassing diplomatic support for the candidacy of former president Pierre Buyoya for the post of Secretary General of the Francophonie, official sources said Wednesday in Bujumbura.

Buyoya’s candidature is the subject of public debate in Bujumbura, with some exceptions on the social media where the former president does not have support because of his political past.

The Burundian minister of foreign relations and international cooperation, Laurent Kavakure, is leading the campaign for Buyoya's candidature.

A new Secretary General is being sought to replace Senegalese Abdou Diouf, whose term expires in November.

Canada, Congo-Brazzaville and Mauritius have also nominated candidates for the post.
