African union holds 'frank and open' talks in Khartoum

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - The African Union (AU) has said it has held talks with Sudanese stakeholders in Khartoum in a spirit of openness and frankness seeking to find a solution for the raging Sudanese socio-political crisis.

A press release by the African Union commission said the Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, paid a working visit to Sudan from 12-14 February during which he met most of the political and social, civil and military actors.

“The meetings made it possible to consider, in a spirit of openness and frankness, the particularly sensitive situation which threatens the country with serious political, security and economic perils.”

The terse release stated that Mr. Faki Mahamat and his delegation were received with "fraternal warmth" by all the interlocutors who discussed all aspects of the situation in the country with "frankness and sincerity", including ways and means of solving its complex crisis, so as to ensure the restoration of Constitutional civil order in the service of peace, stability and development.

It said the Chairperson also met with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Sudan and the Troika.

It added that Mr. Faki Mahamat reaffirmed the relevant fundamental principles of the AU and its commitment to the solution of African problems by Africans, in close cooperation with international partners, in particular the United Nations, in accordance with an approach respectful of such principles and of the sovereignty of the Sudanese people in dealing with their own affairs.
