Abdallah al-Lafi and Moussa Faki discuss inclusive conference on national reconciliation

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The deputy chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, Abdallah al-Lafi, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki, Friday discussed steps taken by the Presidential Council toward the reconciliation project.

They also talked about preparations for the organization of the preparatory forum of the inclusive conference, in addition to a number of proposals that could contribute to the success of the national reconciliation project in Libya.

The meeting took place on Friday in Niamey, the Nigerien capital, on the sidelines of the 17th Extraordinary Summit on industrialization and economic diversification in the African Continental Free Trade Area, said a statement from the Presidential Council.

It was attended by the African Union (AU) envoy for the Libyan file, the adviser for the reconciliation file at the Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Labbad, the deputy foreign minister for international cooperation and organizations, Omar Ketti, and a number of department directors and advisers concerned with foreign affairs at the Presidential Council and the Council of Ministers.

During the meeting, the deputy chairman of the Presidential Council stressed the importance of working with all parties to bring the reconciliation issue to a successful conclusion, saying all Libyans were concerned about it.

He considered that any process that did not lead to elections was a poorly conceived process.

The Libyan official stressed that the Presidential Council faced great challenges, including weak laws and the absence of a constitution in the country, praising the role played by the African Union in this matter.

Faki commended the efforts made by the deputy chairman of the Presidential Council, Abdallah al-Lafi, in his capacity as the person in charge of the national reconciliation file.

The AU boss stressed that the African Union stood by Libya as a pivotal country of the African Union, within the framework of what Libyans themselves decided, assuring that the Union did not impose any solution on Libyans.

He also expressed his support for what al-Lafi said, namely that no party should be excluded from the national reconciliation project.

It should be noted that the African Union is providing technical support to the reconciliation project in Libya and is considering organizing an inclusive conference for the implementation of this project.
