AUC Chairperson discusses Mali's transition timetable with leaders

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat, has ended a visit to Mali to assess the roadmap for a return to constitutional rule saying "real progress" has been made.

Speaking at the end of an audience with the Malian head of state, Colonel Assimi Goita, said: "I leave reassured by what I heard from all the leaders of the Transition, in particular the President of the Transition."

He added: "We came to take stock with the Transition authorities on the steps taken and we are happy to note that real progress has been made by the Malian Transition."

However, he added that "much remains to be done", while encouraging the authorities to redouble their efforts to ensure that the commitments made are fully met.

"We have called for more openness to all political actors and civil society in a strong logic of rejection of any political or social exclusion," said Moussa Faki,

He reaffirmed the support of the AU for the success of the transition.

The AU Commission Chairperson also called for the intensification of efforts to revitalise the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement resulting from the Algiers process in a consensual manner.

He called for the mobilisation of technical and financial resources to support the electoral process, as well as the deepening of political consensus around the major issues at the centre of the concerns of political and social forces.

Mr. Moussa Faki reaffirmed the willingness of the AU, in close coordination with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations, to provide the assistance it can for the stability of Mali.

The visit of the Chairperson of the AU Commission is part of the periodic consultations between the continental organisation and Mali.

Last Monday, the chairperson of the AU Commission met the minister in charge of foreign affairs with their discussions focusing on the transition.
