AU says "things progressing well in Guinea

Conakry, Guinea (PANA) - The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Chadian Moussa Faki Mahama, said here Sunday he was hopeful that things would move in the right direction, two months after the army seized power from former President Alpha Conde on 5 September.

He gave the assurance at the end of his talks with the head of the junta, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, Prime Minister Mohamed Béavogui, and the minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Morissanda Kouyayé, that the AU, like the entire international community, encouraged the next steps of the transition.

"We have come to see with the authorities what the AU can do to accompany Guinea in this transitional phase, particularly for the drafting of the Constitution and the preparation of elections through the census or the revision of the electoral file.

"These are phases that need support," he explained.

Mr. Faki welcomed the "positive steps" taken, including the appointment of a civilian government headed by a civilian prime minister, publication of the Transition Charter and the forthcoming establishment of the National Council for Transition (CNT).

He added that the AU, from which Guinea has been suspended since the seizure of power by the National Committee for Rally and Development (CNRD), would study with the authorities what it could do to support the country in the run-up to the next elections.

Mr. Faki's visit is the first by a senior AU official to Guinea since the overthrow of former President Conde.
