AU Commission Chairperson condemns repression of demonstrations in Chad

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on Thursday condemned the repression of demonstrations that left several people dead in Chad, according to local media.

"I strongly condemn the repression of the demonstrations that led to the death of men in Chad. I call on the parties to respect human life and property and to favour peaceful means to overcome the crisis," Mahamat, a Chadian, wrote on his Twitter handle.

The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and its leagues in Chad have also called for an immediate halt to the violent repression of the ongoing demonstrations in NDjamena, Sarh, Doba, Koumra, Abeche and Moundou by the security forces.

Violent demonstrations broke out on Thursday in several areas of N'Djamena, the Chadian capital, against the transition, despite a ban by the Chadian authorities the day before, local media reported, adding that several people have already been killed during the repression of these demonstrations.

"Demonstrators went out very early this Thursday morning in several areas of the capital, responding to the call of several organizations to demand the transfer of power to civilians at the end of the initial 18-month transition period," wrote the Chadian online media Alwihda Info.

Several people have been killed and others injured in the protests, according to local media.

"Four people have been killed among the demonstrators in N'djamena since this morning. The demonstrations against the transition of Mahamat Idriss Déby have finally taken place in several areas of the Chadian capital," said German radio DW.

Violence occurred this morning in Chad, including the use of lethal weapons against demonstrators, which France condemned, the French embassy in Chad wrote.

"France has no role in these events, which are strictly a matter of internal Chadian politics. The false information on an alleged involvement of France has no basis," the same source said.
