President of Mauritania expected in Tripoli on Thursday for AU mediation in Libyan crisis

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - A high-level delegation from the African Union (AU), led by the Mauritanian president, Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, is expected in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on Thursday, the first stage of a visit to Libya, as part of the African continental organisation's efforts to contribute to the national reconciliation process.

The visit comes a few days before a conference scheduled for mid-October in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the subject.

According to corroborating sources, President Ghazouani, who currently holds the rotating presidency of the African Union, will be accompanied by the Congolese President, Denis Sassou Nguesso, who chairs the African Union's High-Level Committee on Libya, and the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.

President Ghazouani's talks in Tripoli with the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Manfi, whose institution is in charge of national reconciliation, is expected to focus on political, economic, and security developments.

The AU delegation is also due to travel to the eastern city of Benghazi to meet the Libyan parties to advance the national reconciliation process sponsored by the African Union.

A few days before his departure for Libya, the Mauritanian President told his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, that he intended to bridge the differences between the Libyan parties.

The AU, via the High-Level Committee of Heads of State and Government on Libya chaired by Congo, is providing support for the national reconciliation project, and is playing a role in creating the conditions for its success, through technical support and advice.

Differences between the various protagonists in Libya's political crisis have hindered progress on this crucial issue for the stabilization of the North African country, which has been plagued by unrest and insecurity for more than 13 years.

A national reconciliation conference due to have been held on 28 April in the central city of Sirte was postponed indefinitely because of these disagreements.
