Mauritanian President arrives in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Mohamed ould Cheikh Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, arrived in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on Thursday for discssions with officials as part of the African continental organisation's efforts to contribute to the national reconciliation process in the North African country.

According to a statement from the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, he was received at Maitigua International, on the eastern outskirts of Tripoli, by the head of the Ministry, Tahar al-Bahour, and several government officials.

It said President Ghazouni will meet the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Manfi, and the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdulhamid Aldabaiba.

Earlier on Thursday, a meeting between Al-Taher al-Bahour and the Congolese Foreign Minister, Jean-Claude Gakosso, touched on several issues related to the role of the African Union (AU) in Libya, in particular the issue of national reconciliation and the role played by Congo, through President Denis Sassou Nguesso, and the coordination of the conference on the global approach to national reconciliation in the coming period.

Mr al-Bahour stressed the Government's full support for the path of peace and reconciliation, in cooperation with the Presidential Council and other bodies and parties concerned.

Through the African Union High-Level Committee of Heads of State and Government on Libya, chaired by Congo, the African Union is supporting the national reconciliation project in Libya and playing a role in creating the conditions for its success by providing technical assistance and advice to help achieve this national project.

An inclusive AU-facilitated conference is scheduled for mid-October in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
