South Africa beefs up security for Sheeran's Soweto concert

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Organisers of Saturday’s Ed Sheeran concert in Soweto have assured spectators that the security operation will be similar to the security arranged for the 2010 Soccer World Cup  in South Africa.

The event is being held at FNB stadium, the same venue where the World Cup final was played.

There were major concerns over the Global Citizen's concert at the 90,000-seater venue in December when several spectators were mugged and attacked outside the venue.

At least 1,156 security officers are expected within the stadium perimeter and a further 100 outside. In addition, members of the Police Flying Squad and Dog Units will be in attendance.

The event's safety officer Mike Lord said: “We are reinventing the World Cup security plan and remain confident that it will work”.

Sheeran (MBE) is an English singer and songwriter and his current world tour is the fourth-highest-grossing concert tour of all time with ticket sales of US$556 million. Saturday’s concert is sold out as well as his concert in Cape Town on 28 March.
