Senegalese rally around flood victims
Dakar, Senegal (PANA) - The people of Senegal have come together in solidarity with the victims of the massive flooding in the country, which left at least nine dead and caused extensive damage.
In response to a call by President Macky Sall, many Senegalese have been donating funds in support of the state efforts to ameliorate the effect of the tragedy.
The Caliph General of the Murids (one of the major Muslim brotherhoods of Senegal), Cheikh Sidy Makhtar Mbacké, has donated FCFA 1 billion (US$2,000,000) as a contribution to the state’s effort in the field of sanitation.
Also, a businessman, Cheikh Amar, has announced a contribution of FCFA 50 million (US$100,000), in addition to making several pumps available to victims.
Television channels have also raised nearly FCFA 250 million (US$500,000) in donations for flood victims, while many musicians, including Coumba Gawlo, Pape Diouf and Fatou Guewel, have responded favorably to the call.
Other contributors include the Mimram Group, the Senegalese Sugar Company and Grands
Moulins in Dakar, which offered FCFA 100 million (US$200,000) as emergency rescue plan;
various organizations in the transport sector, which gave FCFA 15 million (US$30,000); and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Equipment, Benoît Sambou, who gave 124 motor-pumps and metal fittings to his colleague in charge of the Department of the Interior, Mbaye Ndiaye, as part of efforts made to enhance the plan’s capacity.
He also presented cheques valued at FCFA 20 million (US$40,000), 1,000 boxes of 15 litres of bleach and 500 cans of 10 liters of oil offered by companies.
According to him, some anonymous donors gave FCFA 35 million (US$70,000), 30 tons of rice and 1,000 mosquito nets.
Also, the National company of Telecommunications (SONATEL) has offered FCFA 120 million (US$240,000) to the municipal health centre Philippe Maguilène Senghor located in the traditional neighborhood of Yoff to enable it to support the victims.
For its part, the National Agency for Children Welfare (ANCTP) collected FCFA 1.5 million (US$ 3,000) and food donations to help the victims and have made available for them their local facilities scattered throughout the country.
The Senegalese Red Cross plans to provide 200 family tents that can accommodate 7-8 persons each, and 1,000 mosquito nets, blankets, mats and two trucks.
Meanwhile, the President of the Court of Auditors, Abdou Bame Gueye, has assured that his structure will ensure a judicious use of the funds contributed.
Over the last weekend, the Senegalese capital recorded 156 mm of rain in less than two hours.
