Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - Sudanese army chief, Lieutenant General Abdul Fatah Al Burhan, says security and humanitarian concerns dictated the withdrawal of his troops from the besieged city of El Fasher.
The rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said on Sunday it had taken “complete control” of the 6th Infantry Division command in the city, the Sudanese army’s main base in North Darfur state, following fierce battles, thus dealing a major blow to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in the bloody war that has been going on for more than two years.
In his first reaction on Monday since the RSF entered and took over the city, Burhan said that the SAF command in the field, including the security committee, decided to leave the city after it was subjected to systematic destruction and killing of civilians.
He said: "We agreed with them to leave the city and go to a safe place to spare the rest of the citizens and the rest of the city from destruction.
"We, as the Sudanese people, will hold these criminals accountable. We, as Sudanese, will exact retribution on behalf of our people who have been wronged and harmed by these treacherous, hostile hands, hands that do not belong to the Sudanese people."
Gen. Al-Burhan said these are experiences they have had recently in the war, adding "We can turn the tables every time and we can restore every land desecrated by these traitors to the bosom of the homeland."
He said Security Council resolutions and all international norms are being violated, and no one is talking about them, and no one is being held accountable.
