Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire (PANA) - Ivorian Lassana Palenfo and Nigeria's Habu Gumel have been re-elected as President and Treasurer-General respectively of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).
Palenfo, an Ivorian army general, and Gumel, Nigeria's member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), were both re-elected unopposed at the ongoing 15th General Assembly of ANOCA in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire's economic capital city.
However, incumbent Secretary-General Khaled Zein Eldin of Egypt was defeated by Tommy Sithole of Zimbabwe, who served in that capacity from 1997 to 2003
Algeria's Mustapha Ibarraf defeated Aggrey Moussa Mahamat of Chad to emerge 1st Vice President; Dacosta Joao Manuel of Sao Tome & Principe defeated South Africa's Tubby Reddy for 2nd Vice-President; Mauritian Hao Thy Voon Phippe Ha Shun defeated two others to emerge 3rd Vice President while the post of 4th Vice President, contested exclusively by women, went to the President of Lesotho Olympic Committee, Matiohang Moiloa-Ramoqopo.
PANA reports that all the elected officials will serve for four years ending in 2016.
Representatives from 53 member-nations of ANOCA are attending the Assembly, due to round off on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Gumel has expressed happiness at his re-election, saying his immediate task would be to see to the completion of the ANOCA's permanent secretariat building in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
''My immediate task on return to Nigeria is to ensure the full completion of the ANOCA Building in Abuja, so that ANOCA can settle in Nigeria. This is part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Federal Government and ANOCA. As a member of the executive committee, I will work hard to accomplish this task,'' he pledged.
For his part, an elated Gen. Palenfo told PANA that his re-election had strengthened his resolve to work harder for ANOCA.
''I have now graduated to come back to re-organise things at ANOCA. I have to put to use my years of experience in organising from the IOC,'' he said.
