Heads of state of Alliance of Sahel States hold summit in Niamey on Saturday

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - The transition presidents of the three countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), Colonel Assimi Goïta of Mali, Captain Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso and General Abdourahamane Tiani of Niger, will meet on Saturday, 6 July 2024 in Niamey, Niger, for their first summit, according to an official source.

In a press release, the Presidency of Niger invited the people of Niamey and the surrounding area to come out en masse this Friday after the High Prayer to give a "warm welcome worthy of the legendary hospitality of the people of Niger to the Heads of State of the ESA and their delegations.

On 16 September 2023, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger signed the Liptako-Gourma charter, creating a historic cross-border region in West Africa and the Sahel, shared by the three countries.

After breaking off several cooperation agreements with France, these military-led countries announced at the end of January that they were leaving the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), believing that the institution was "under the sway" of Paris.
