Energy regulator cracks down on illegal crossborder LPG trade

Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - Thirteen (13) people have been arraigned in court and charged with different malpractices related to the sale, resale and transportation of Petroleum products, the Kenyan energy regulator has said.

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) says the suspects were apprehended during an inspection of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) trucks on transit at the Namanga border, Kajiado county.

Namanga is a border town straddling the Kenyan border and that of its southern neighbor, Tanzania.

The ERC, in collaboration with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), intercepted twelve (12) trucks loaded with Liquefied Petroleum Gas.

"Ten LPG trucks did not have valid ERC transportation licenses, one (1) truck did not have an ERC import license and one (1) truck did not comply with National Police Service requirements.

The Commission said it will continue to intensify countrywide surveillance in the petroleum subsector in order to curb malpractices including;

a. The importation and sale of LPG that does not meet the Kenyan Standards.
b. The transportation of LPG in bulk without a valid ERC license.
c. The wholesale of LPG without a valid ERC license.
d. The operation of unlicensed LPG storage and filling plants.
e. The filling of LPG cylinders without the authority of the brand owner.
f. The filling and sale of LPG cylinders that do not meet the Kenya Standards.
