Accra, Ghana (PANA) - The sub-regional group ECOWAS at the end of its 59th summit here Saturday re-elected Ghana's President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo chair of the bloc.
A communique issued at the end of the 59th Ordinary Session of the group held Saturday, 19 June, 2021, said the decision was reached by consensus.
The Ghanaian leader was elected chair of the 15-member Economic Community of West African States at its 57th summit held in September in Niamey, Niger in September, 2020, taking over from Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou.
The statement stated: "The Heads of State and Government appointed H.E. Nana Ado Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government for another one-year term."
The summit commended President Akufo-Addo for achieving the bloc's objectives to improve the programme and operational efficiency of ECOWAS institutions and to promote the implementation of integration programmes geared towards the economic and social development of the region.
