Burundi: Govt. calls for campaign break during Christmas holidays

Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) – The Burundian government has appealed to all parties in the country observe "a break" in their campaign ahead of next year’s elections during the Christmas and New Year holidays to enable the people to celebrate the holidays in peace.

There have been fierce debates between the presidential majority and the opposition ahead of the election.

The government in a communiqué announced the strengthening of security measures to guarantee safe holidays in Burundi, including the deployment of large members of the defence and security forces, particularly in the capital, Bujumbura.

It said gatherings at night clubs, public places or in households must not disrupt public order and must also be authorized by the local administration and police.

Burundi has a population of 75% Christians.
