Benin: UNFPA places youth and demographic dividend at centre of LDC conference
Cotonou, Benin (PANA) – The ministerial conference on new partnerships for the strengthening of reproductive capacities within the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) opens on Monday in Cotonou, Benin.
According to UN Population Fund (UNFPA) its executive director, Dr Babatundé Osotimehin, would lead a parallel session on the theme “Youth, development of human capital and the achievement of demographic dividend in Africa.”
The UNFPA parallel session will be a panel to discuss issues related, among other things, to the reduction of fertility, thanks to voluntary family planning, female education and job creation.
The conference, which brings together about 300 participants, aims at identifying new and innovative partners to back the efforts made by LDCs in the strengthening of their reproductive capacities, which is the priority of the Istanbul Action Programme (IAP) and will focus on the appropriate means of implementation.
The conference will outline recommendations for measures on development partnerships, by taking into account South-South cooperation, sending of funds by migrants and other forms of traditional foreign financing, mobilization of domestic resources, public-private partnership and management of domestic resources and other potentials.
Recommendations will enrich discussions on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development programme.
The conference will also offer the opportunity to launch concrete and innovative mechanisms to mobilize financial resources for the LDCs.
Key personalities expected at the conference include the Secretary General of Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), Mrs Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, the Beninese minister in charge of Evaluation of Public Policies and de-nationalization, Antonin Dossou, Moreen Majiwa, Oxfam representative, a Niger medical student, Mrs Zeinabou Maman Noura, and Mrs Princess Elliot, a Management student in Sierra Leone.
